Butte County Promise

Local Educators Pledge K-20 CollaborationLeaders with Mascots

Educational leaders in Butte County were on hand to formally sign the Butte County Promise on February 1, 2018 at Little Chico Creek Elementary School, 2090 Amanda Way, in Chico.

The Butte County Promise is the culmination of over a year of planning and collaboration between representatives from every district in the county led by the following partners:

• Jennifer Macarthy, ADVANCE North State
• Samia Yaqub, Superintendent/President, Butte College
• Tim Taylor, Superintendent, Butte County Office of Education
• Gayle Hutchinson, President, California State University, Chico
• Kelly Staley, Superintendent, Chico Unified School District
• Yvonne McQuaid, First Five Butte County

  • The Butte County Promise and the commitment to work together on behalf of all students reads as follows:

“All students in Butte County will be prepared for success beyond high school in order to become productive members of the workforce and engaged citizens. Success is defined as earning a certificate in a career education field, completing an associate’s degree, achieving a bachelor’s degree and/or obtaining an advanced degree.

There are two complementary aspects to the partnership. The first is to align area educational programs with the needs of employers. The second is to coordinate the programs, pathways, and processes within the segments of the educational system (Butte County Office of Education and K-12 districts, Butte College, and CSU, Chico) in order to create a seamless transition for students and families.”

  • “The Butte County Promise is another way we intend to meet our responsibility to prepare our young people for successful careers and productive lives,” said Dr. Gayle Hutchinson, CSU, Chico President.

  • Dr. Samia Yaqub, President of Butte College, said the collaborative is a tremendous venue for ongoing dialog. “We are fortunate that the educational leaders in our community work together so effectively to meet the needs of our students. This agreement demonstrates our ongoing collaboration and our desire to make it even more productive,” Yaqub said.

  • Kelly Staley, Superintendent of Chico Unified, believes the Butte County Promise will further align K-12 education with the demands of life after high school. “It’s our goal to create an environment where students can think, imagine and explore all the opportunities available to them through education,” explained Staley. “As educators, we strive to remove obstacles and provide our young students with the tools and confidence to know that any dream or career is within reach.”

  • Full text of the Butte County Promise and individual commitments of the partners is available here. It is anticipated that this partnership will expand to include the Glenn County Office of Education and school districts in Glenn County.
